Black Dog Team Rappels for Autism Speaks

March 10, 2014

Would you face your fears and rappel down a 23-story building for a good cause? Two members of the Black Dog Promotions staff went Over The Edge on Thursday, March 6, for Autism Speaks Arizona and they weren’t even scared!

Just kidding, they may have been a tad bit nervous.

Chris Kontos and Lauren Fach suited up with helmets and harnesses atop the Hyatt Regency Hotel‘s roof in downtown Phoenix and awaited instruction from Amanda and Aaron, two experienced Over The Edge instructors. They look ready for this, don’t you think?

Over The Edge is a special events company that provides exciting events for non-profit organizations throughout the world. Participants raise funds for their choice non-profit, Autism Speaks Arizona was the recipient in this case, in exchange for the once-in-a-lifetime experience of rappelling over the edge of a local building.

Don’t worry about the technical details because Over The Edge takes care of setting up the insurance, staffing and industrial equipment, so the participant can just focus on overcoming the challenge and having fun!

Here’s Chris Kontos, ASU Campus Rep for Black Dog Promotions, ready to start the climb down 23 stories for charity. He was brave enough to go first and Lauren really appreciated his valor, as she needed a few more minutes to gain some courage.

“It was the was the craziest thing I have ever done, but it was for a great cause. Leaning off the edge of a tall building went against every instinct I had, but once I felt the ropes catch me, I was fine,” said Chris Kontos.

Check out Lauren on her descent down from the roof. She took her time and carefully maneuvered the ropes, making sure she didn’t fall too quickly.

“I can’t believe I faced my fears and rappelled down the wall. It was a HUGE challenge for me and I’m so proud that I was able to overcome the fear to help people with Autism,” said Lauren Fach.

The Over The Edge event with Autism Speaks officially began on Friday, March 7, at 8:30 a.m. with local celebrities such as LIVE 101.5‘s morning radio host Lady La and baseball team mascots D. Baxter of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Lou Seal of the San Francisco Giants, who lined up to scale the hotel’s wall for Autism Awareness.
