Junior Achievement (JA) serves as a program to empower college-bound students with the confidence and skills to own their economic success. In the JA program, volunteers and instructors teach students valuable skills such as interview techniques, resume writing, problem solving and interpersonal communications and also how to apply what they’ve learned to careers in the global job market.

This year, Scott Kelly was involved in multiple Junior Achievement sessions at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert, where he mentored Junior Achievement students. Scott has a background in finance, entrepreneurism and business development, which are important topics for future business professionals to be familiar with for a variety of careers. This is the 10th year that Scott has provided classroom instruction for the Junior Achievement program.

In the next step of the JA program, a group of students from each participating school attends the JA You’re Hired! Challenge, where they can participate in individual and group competitions. The 6th Annual Junior Achievement You’re Hired! Challenge and Internship Program kicked off on March 28, 2014, at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix. Many of the workshops and competitive sessions focused on networking, interviewing, leadership, ethics and more.

During the You’re Hired! Challenge, members from Black Dog Promotions staff interacted with JA students and got a little insight as to why they joined Junior Achievement.

“I hope to get real life experience,” said Danyelle Morrill, an 18-year-old senior at Perry High School.

Fellow senior, Jessica Dunn, 17, said, “I want to know what expect in the real world, so I decided to get involved in Junior Achievement now.”

Finally, participating Juniors and Seniors are eligible to apply for part-time summer internships. Interns are required to follow through with the third component, the JA You’re Hired! Professional Development Program prior to and during their internship.

Last year, Black Dog Promotions interviewed and hired Junior Achievement intern, Chris Kontos from Desert Vista High School, for the summer of 2013. He was mature, had a very professional manner about him and he was a fast learner.

We enjoyed working with Chris and seeing his growth with our company. Stay tuned to Black Dog Promotions, as we plan to welcome a new JA intern to our team this summer. We can’t wait!
